Isaiah 51:12
I, even I, am he that comforteth you.
Our sins are repulsive in the sight of God. However, God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Jesus took our sins upon His shoulders by embracing the cross. He represented us before the Father and became the living sacrifice for our sins.
The death penalty of the cross was extremely painful as the Romans were known to be brutal with their punishment. Jesus was beaten beyond recognition and nailed to the cross. Suspended between heaven and earth, He asked the Father for our forgiveness. However, the heavens were silent. Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? The repulsiveness of our sins created a separation between God the Father and Jesus the Son. Throughout eternity they have never been separated. It was unbearable and excruciating that Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
Imagine for a moment what Jesus went through. The crucifixion of Christ was a very excruciating way to die. The loss of blood made Him weak, and the cross was heavy. He was abandoned by His disciples and humiliated publicly. Each breath was painful as He struggled to plead our case before the Father. In the end, the Father forsakes Him.
After the resurrection, the disciples saw Him healed. The holes, scars, and stripes remained, a constant reminder of His unconditional love for us. We were created for His pleasure and for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame.
Throughout life, there may be a painful experience that will pierce our hearts. Losing a child can be very excruciating and the separation unbearable. In time we will learn to cope with the loss, but the emptiness, memories, and pain linger. There seems to be no remedy or words of sentiment that can numb the pain of a broken heart.
Pain is a universal language, and only those that have experienced it can relate to those who are going through it. God the Father and Jesus the Son willingly went to the depth of pain for us. If you are in a painful situation, don’t wait and come to Christ. He knows your pain and is the only one that can comfort you.
