Choices with Eternal Consequences # 249

2 Samuel 1:25

How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!

O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.

Jonathan’s heart was loyal to King Saul, the will of the flesh. Yet, Jonathan loves David, the anointed man of God. The soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

The people chose Saul to be the first king of Israel, and his son Jonathan was heir to the throne by entitlement. Saul is a slogan for the will of the flesh. He believed he was doing the will of the Lord, but due to his pride and disobedience, he rebelled against God. Saul was hateful and tormented because the Spirit of the Lord was no longer with him. Like a good son, Jonathan desired to please his father, but he tasted the presence of God in David.

David was a shepherd boy with a heart’s desire to please the Lord. He was anointed with oil by Samuel the prophet to be the next king of Israel. God said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. Therefore, Saul hated, chased, and hunted David to kill him.

Through David, Jonathan tasted and saw that the Lord was good. He was a breath of fresh air filled with unspeakable joy and full of glory. Something that he never experiences with his father. Jonathan had a choice between Saul and David. No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Sadly, Jonathan chose to follow Saul, his father, thus forfeiting God’s blessing over his life. The mighty fall because they embrace Saul, the will of the flesh. Instead of David, the will of God.

Making the right decision can be difficult, yet crucial to your eternal destiny in God. By embracing the Lord, you will offend some people but partake of His destiny for your life. However, those that choose the people will offend God and forfeit their destiny. Therefore, choose you this day whom ye will serve. Your decision today will either bless or curse your tomorrow and your destiny. On one side is Saul, and on the other is David, remember your choices have eternal consequences.
